Weekly Painting Challenge - Week 4, Sunday Update

Hey Everyone,

sorry for the lack of posts this week.  Seems like my life is just getting busier and busier.  I finished my Grey Knights Vindicare Assassin as usual. Here are the pictures:

Well, that's it for this weeks painting challenge. I have now completed my 2000 point Grey Knight Army. As mentioned earlier in the week, I may not be posting a new challenge next week, as I am getting married in September. I will also be posting a tutorial sometime in the next week to show how I painted up the Vindicare Assassin. So, stay tuned.

Thanks for reading.

J

Weekly Painting Challenge - Week 4, Monday/Wednesday Update

Hey Everyone,

sorry for the delayed update. I will once again be giving myself a weekly painting challenge, which should keep me on track for my painting goals. As mentioned last week, I would love it if you would like to join in, and give yourself a weekly painting challenge. Feel free to post your challenge in the comments section below. Remember, you do not have to give yourself anything extreme. If you paint even a model or two a week, you would be surprised how quickly you end up with a finished army.

So, my challenge to myself this week is to finish my 2000 point Grey Knight list with a Vindicare Assassin. Here are "before" pictures (of its current state):

As you can see above, it is just assembled. Well, that is my weekly challenge for myself. I will be posting pictures throughout the week, stating my progress on my weekly challenge.
Thanks for reading and I will be posting more soon.

Sincerely,
J

Weekly Painting Challenge - Week 3, Thursday Update

Hey Everyone,

Here is my update for this weeks painting challenge. This week, I decided to only challenge myself to painting a single model, though it is a really detailed one. Here are updated pictures of what my Librarian model looks like:
Grey Knights Librarian in Terminator Armour Work In Progress

As you can see, I have finished up the silvers, blues, browns and reds, and have started the golds. As you may have noticed, I swapped out the warding stave for a force halberd as well. I still have  a good amount of detail left to paint though. However, I am confident that I will once again make my painting challenge.

I will be posting more pics in the near future.

Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,

My First Citadel Finecast Miscast Experience - Part 2

Hey Everyone,

so, last week, I wrote how I got a miscast on my terminator Librarian model. So, on monday, I called up GW, and after speaking with an AWESOME customer rep, they sent me a new model. So, it took only 4 days to ship from the states to here in Canada. Here is a picture of the new model they sent me:

After checking out the new model, I new that this one is in much better condition than the original. However, the original is still pretty decent. So, now I have 2 Finecast Librarians for the price of 1. Not a bad deal in the end.

So, though the quality was not neccessarily there for the first model, I did get a new model free of cost and now have 2 hqs. Therefore, my overall experience was positive and I am just as positive regarding GW products as I was when I made my finecast review. I know some of you do not like GW sometimes, and though I can definitely understand, I feel you cannot beat the way they deal with these kind of problems.

Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,
J

Week 3 Painting Challenge, Monday

Hey Everyone,

so, I will once again be giving myself a weekly painting challenge, which should keep me on track for my painting goals. As mentioned last week, I would love it if you would like to join in, and give yourself a weekly painting challenge. Feel free to post your challenge in the comments section below. So, my challenge to myself this week is to finish my Librarian in Terminator Armour HQ model for my grey knights army. Here are "before" pictures (of its current state):

As you can see above, there is a big miscast in the warding stave. Therefore, I will be changing it for a force halberd. Plus, it Has NOT EVEN BEEN ASSEMBLED YET. Therefore, I definitely have my work cut out for me this week. This model is not as detailed as the Draigo Model I painted last week, but still will take some time.

Well, that is my weekly challenge for myself. I will be posting pictures throughout the week, stating my progress on my weekly challenge.
Thanks for reading and I will be posting more soon.

My First Citadel Finecast Miscast Experience

Hey Everyone,

you read correctly. This week, I got my first miscast for the new citadel Finecast Range. However, to be fair, this is my fifth finecast model, so 1 for 5 is not the worst. Here is a picture of my Librarian in Terminator Armour's Warding Stave:

As you can see, the cords are completely toast, with a HUGE chunk missing. However, the rest of the model is looking great:

However, I did not get upset. I just called the GW people, and explained them the situation. I must say, this dude was the nicest customer representative I have EVER spoken with. He did not question my claim in the least. He only asked me for the problem, the batch number and where I purchased it from. In fact, while he was filling out the report, he even asked me a few questions about my army and we spoke for a minute or so about the game. In the end, he told me that a new Librarian is on the way to my house free of charge and will be at my house either late this week or early next week. Plus, I get to keep my original one with the miscast. That is actually pretty sweet!!! Seeing as it is only the warding stave, I should be able to convert him to hold a halberd or sword (as the Grey Knights Codex gives at base cost). So, I get two models for the price of one, and had nothing but a great experience with the GW people. So, as in my review, I am not too worried about miscasts. If they are tiny, we can easily deal with them and if they are large, GW replaces them free of charge with very few questions asked.

So, I will be posting pictures of my new librarian model when he arrives. Hopefully everything works out.

Talk to you soon.

Sincerely,
J

Hey Everyone,

Weekly Painting Challenge - Week 1, Thursday Update

Hey Everyone,

hope your weeks are going well. Here is an update on my weekly painting challenge. As you may or may not be aware, this week I gave myself (perhaps foolishly) the challenge of painting an entire 10-man paladin squad by the end of sunday. Since the previous squad took more than a month (working on and off), this is a bit of a challenge. However, it has been giving me the motivation that I needed to get these guys in gear. So, without further ado, here are pictures of the guys so far:

So, as you can see, I have actually made a pretty good amount of progress, seeing as the week is only half over. I have finished painting the silvers, browns and almost the reds. The next task will be to paint the gold areas, then blacks.  Plus the banner is going to take me a little while on its own. Well, I had better get back to painting. Time is a tickin!!!!

Sincerely,
J

Steps to Being a Better Miniature Painter – Part 9 - Batch Painting

Hey Everybody,

hope your summers are going well. As you are probably aware, I am now doing my weekly challenge for painting. This week, I (perhaps foolishly), gave myself a week to paint an entire 10-man squad of paladins. Seeing as it took me 5 weeks (on and off) to paint the first squad, a week is perhaps a little too crazy of a challenge. But hey, what can you do? As tomorrow is the half way mark in my painting challenge, I will be posting pictures of my current status. Prepare to be... well... you will see.

So, this challenge reminds me an important topic in the miniature painting game - BATCH PAINTING. This is when you are painting a squad or group of miniatures at once. Batch painting can be a real time-saver, depending on the circumstances. When batchpainting, I really recommend writing down the exact order of colours you want to paint the miniatures with. Then, I typically line up all of the miniatures that I am going to paint and go 1 colour at a time. I will not make sure that each model is done for that colour then move on the next. When you are done with that colour, you can put it away and not have to worry about missing any spots. This is especially important when batch painting models that are not at the same stage of painting when you begin.  However, that leaves the question, when is it a good idea to batch paint?

Good Idea - It is a great idea to batch paint when you have a group of miniatures that are similar or identical in colour or painting steps.  For example, if you are painting a horde army (e.g. tyranids, orks, imperial guard), batch painting will save you loads of time.  Same goes for when you are painting a squad of space marines.

When is disadvantageous to batch paint? - I do not recommend batch painting when you are painting individual important models like Hq's or monsterous creatures. Sometimes when you batch paint, the individual detail can be lost, as you typically do not allocate as much time to each model. For these important models, it is good to keep the detail in the model, since they will stick out in your army. Also, I would not recommend batch painting if you are painting a set of miniatures with drastically different colour schemes. Typically, if you try batch painting, you will find that each model may require a different order of colours (if you paint outward - refer to other post), which could confuse you and slow down the process.

Well, that is all for now and I will be posting pictures soon.

Sincerely,
J

Weekly Painting Challenge - Week 1, Monday

Hey Everyone,

so, as I mentioned last week, I have decided to give myself a weekly painting challenge each week. I am hoping this challenge will keep me on track, allowing me to paint more models, and create more tutorials, reviews, and tips for you all. However, I would really appreciate YOUR HELP with this challenge. To keep me motivated, I humbly request that you (my amazing readers and subscribers) keep following my videos and blog, so that I know that I am being kept honest on my challenge.

Also, I would love it if you would like to join in, and give yourself a weekly painting challenge. Feel free to post your challenge in the comments section below. Remember, you do not have to give yourself anything extreme. If you paint even a model or two a week, you would be surprised how quickly you end up with a finished army.

So, my challenge to myself this week is to finish my second 10-man paladin squad for my grey knights army. Here are "before" pictures (of their current state):

As you can see, for my first 4 guys, 2 have several colours on them, and the other two have been based and have armour painted. I hope to have these guys completely done by the end of the week.

My second half of the squad, which you can see here, HAVE NOT EVEN BEEN ASSEMBLED YET. Therefore, I definitely have my work cut out for me this week.

Well, that is my weekly challenge for myself. I will be posting pictures throughout the week, stating my progress on my weekly challenge.

Thanks for reading and I will be posting more soon.

Sincerely,
J
